Bed Buying Guide

Here at The English Bed Company, we have a wide variety of beds available, ranging from contemporary to traditional. We also have a range of upholstery options, with fabrics, velvet, leathers and wool all available. If you’re in need of something a little more practical, there’s a selection of storage beds which can help keep your bedroom tidy and clutter-free.

Which bed you choose is purely personal preference. But if you find yourself needing some advice or handy tips, we’ve made this bed buying guide to help you out.

Size

The first thing to consider when buying your new bed is the size. You might already know which size you want, but whether it will fit in your room is another thing to consider. We do every size of bed, from single to emperor, so there’s plenty to choose from. If you have a big bed in mind, like a super king or emperor, it’s important to make sure that it can get into your house, and into the bedroom. Because of this, we’ve provided the dimensions of each bed on their individual product pages, as well as useful diagrams to give you an idea of how the dimensions work.

Rowe bed

To make sure the bed fits into your house, take note of the dimensions of the bed you want, and check them against the entrance it will be coming through, any staircases it may have to go up, and if it can be manoeuvred at the top of the stairs. Once you know you can get it into the bedroom, setting out tape or old newspapers in the shape of the bed can be really helpful. This helps you visualise how big the bed will look in the room, so you can make sure it doesn’t make the room look too small or over-crowded.

Our beds are delivered disassembled, and then assembled by our delivery team in your bedroom-making it easier to get into your home. The most important measurement to note is the headboard size as this will be the biggest part. If the headboard seems too big to fit, our headboards that have wings now come in three separate pieces to ease access.

Style

Next up in our Bed Buying Guide is the style of the bed. This comes down to the style of your room, although a lot of our designs suit a variety of Décor styles. Our Austen bed may look traditional, with its deep buttoning and sloping wings, but when upholstered in the right fabric, it can fit seamlessly into a modern setting. The same goes for our beds with foot boards, such as the Blake. This bed is typically seen as a vintage style bed, but we’ve seen them upholstered in our velvet range or British Fabric collection and they’ve been stunning additions to a variety of settings.

If you do need something more typically modern, our new Byron and Armitage beds are ideal for that contemporary scene, as well as being comfortably padded for an extra bit of luxury.

Frame

Again, this is down to personal preference, but you may find your perfect bed and it might change your mind. Some of our beds such as our Dickens and Lawrence come on tall legs, and you can choose from a selection of tapered or carved wooden legs. These legs provide an elevated look for the bed, and it can help make the bed look smaller if your room doesn’t have as much space.

However, if you’re looking for something to make the bed look a bit cosier, why not take a look at a bed like our Larkin? These beds come on small, square legs and are closer to the ground.

Storage

If you want some extra storage, a gas lift or storage bed is ideal as it doesn’t take up any extra room. If you want a gas lift bed, it’ll be upholstered to the ground and will make storing extra duvets and sheets a piece of cake! If you opt for a bed with drawers, this means the bed will come as a divan base and it will have a valance to match the fabric of your bed. Some people prefer a divan base, as it’s easier to move if needed, and the storage drawers are a brilliant option to keep the room clean!
