Single to Grande Emperor: Finding Your Perfect Fit
Choosing the right size is one of the most important decisions when buying a new bed. This guide to UK bed sizes sets out the mattress dimensions for every size we make, from a single to a generous grande emperor, and how to work out which will suit your room and the way you sleep.
UK bed sizes at a glance
The table below shows the mattress size for each of our beds. The overall frame will be wider and longer than the mattress, and the exact amount depends on the design, so check the dimensions on each product page before ordering.
| Bed size | Mattress size (cm) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 x 190 | Children, guest rooms, single sleepers |
| Double | 135 x 190 | Single adults, couples in smaller rooms |
| King | 150 x 198 | Couples wanting more room |
| Super King | 180 x 198 | Couples, or families with small visitors |
| Emperor | 200 x 200 | Larger master bedrooms |
| Grande Emperor | 215 x 215 | The ultimate statement bed |
Choose the size for how you sleep, then let the room decide the design.
Double vs king size: which is right for you?
A double bed gives each person in a couple roughly the width of a cot mattress, which is why many couples move up to a king size bed when they replace their bed. The extra 15cm of width and the slightly longer mattress make a noticeable difference to comfort, especially if one of you moves around in the night.
If your room can take it, a king is often the most comfortable choice for two adults. If space is tight, a well-designed double with a slimmer headboard can feel surprisingly generous.
Super king, emperor and grande emperor
For larger bedrooms, a super king size bed gives couples a real sense of space, and is popular with families when little ones join you on a weekend morning. Our emperor beds and grande emperor beds go further still, making the bed the centrepiece of the room. You can read more in our post on the benefits of buying a big bed.
Larger sizes look their best with room to breathe around them, so plan for space on both sides and at the foot of the bed.

Most of our designs are available in all six sizes. Storage options are offered on double, king and super king beds, and our storage bed guide explains the choices. If you need a size that's slightly different, our bespoke design service can help.
How to measure your room
- Allow at least 60–70cm on each side of the bed so you can move around and make it easily.
- Leave around 75cm or more at the foot, more if you have wardrobes or drawers that open towards the bed.
- Check the overall frame size, not just the mattress. Winged and sleigh designs take up more room than a simple panel headboard.
- Measure doors, stairs and landings so you know your new bed can be delivered to the room.
Our furniture access guide explains what to measure before you order.
Getting the size right
Measure twice
Check the overall bed dimensions on the product page against your room, leaving space to walk around the bed.
Think about access
Measure doorways, stairs and landings. It's the most overlooked step in buying a large bed.
Match your mattress
Our mattresses are made to fit our beds exactly, so there are no gaps at the edges or overhang.
Your questions, answered
- What size is a king size bed in the UK?
- A UK king size mattress for our beds is 150 x 198cm. The overall frame is larger and depends on the design.
- What is the difference between a super king and an emperor bed?
- Our super king mattress is 180 x 198cm and our emperor is 200 x 200cm, so an emperor is 20cm wider and slightly longer.
- What is the biggest bed size you make?
- Our largest is the grande emperor, with a 215 x 215cm mattress. Browse our grande emperor beds.
- Are UK bed sizes the same as European sizes?
- No. UK and European sizes differ, so always buy a mattress made for your bed's exact dimensions. Ours are made to fit our frames.
